Keeping your workforce motivated and productive requires work. Often, when deadlines come calling and the number of responsibilities multiplies, even the well-intentioned leader can find it energy-sapping to motivate the rest of the team. Natris Morris: Reading Is a Conversation

Natris Morris is a man of many interests. He enjoys writing and is currently developing a screenplay. He is also an astute businessman who established his own record label and is the founder and owner of Cephalic Service Center, LLC, a provider of merchant account services.

He also enjoys reading about history, and says that it has provided him with new insights to the world around him. Natris Morris says that he has always been interested in history, but his reading of it improved and expanded after he began to change his approach to it. It occurred to him that reading can be looked at as a conversation, in which the author of the book wants to tell him something that he thinks is both true and important. That simple insight and change in perspective made reading about history even more interesting to him than it already was.

Now, says Natris Morris, he looks at reading as something where the author is trying to tell him something, convince him of a certain point of view, and persuade him that the facts under consideration are important. These, he realizes, are at the heart of virtually all conversations, speeches, and arguments. And they are equally true when considering history books, articles, and essays. Even the dullest of prose writing can be more interesting to him when he looks at the subject matter from that point of view.

Sometimes history subjects can be very complex, but Natris Morris has learned not to get too hung up on things that he doesn’t understand. He finds it useful to keep reading without stopping to look up those things he doesn’t get, even though looking something up is as quick and easy as a Google search. It’s better to keep going and pay attention to those things that he does understand. If he doesn’t then it is likely he will get stalled. Ideally he gives the book or article a second read later on, and often the things he didn’t understand the first time through become clearer. And if they don’t, then that is the time to stop and look them up.

Natris Morris - The Creative Process

Natris Morris has recorded and released several of his own rap CDs. His album Cross My Heart was released by Shatter Dreams Music in 2000, and his second album, Me & My Guys, was released by his own label, also called Cross My Heart, four years later. It included such rap tunes as Oh Yeah, Double Life, Live or Die, and Never Be the Same.

Natris Morris understands the creative process as a mysterious thing. His best work seems to come out of nowhere, the product of a lot of hard work and the kind of inspiration that comes to him without warning and without rhyme or reason. And so he isn’t always sure how to answer the question, how do you write your songs? It’s hard to explain how it’s done, he replies, but there are still a few tips that he can pass along.

One of the most important elements of a good song is having a catchy hook that gets stuck in the minds of the listener. This is sometimes its chorus: that part of a song that gets repeated between verses. Natris Morris says that there is no blueprint for songwriting. Sometimes the hook or chorus comes first, and sometimes the verses come first. But the important thing is that the hook has to be catchy because it gets repeated the most. When someone hears your song it’s the part that will stick in their head, and when they think of it later it will be the part that they remember first. It does not necessarily have to catch the essence of the song, he says. But it is important that it is catchy.
